Type 3 Plant
Strelitzia Reginae are commonly known as 'bird of paradise' plants due to the brightly coloured striking flowers they produce in succession throughout the growing season. These flowers protrude from a hard sideways sheath called a spathe, from which 3 orange sepals and 3 blue petals protrude in a fan shape to form their beautiful flowers.
These plants can grow in excess of 6 feet tall at maturity, and have leaves over 2 feet long. They prefer a brightly lit warm spot all year round, but will take much more water during the growing season - where they can be kept moist but never soggy - than over winter where the soil can be left to dry out almost completely between waters (depending on conditions). Be careful to repot them as they grow to avoid them becoming top heavy or potbound, and keep the leaves clean from dust using a wet cloth.
