Platycerium Bifurcatum, better known as the Staghorn Fern, is one of the most unique plants in our collection and a plant we use all the time in our mounted staghorn workshops! With antler-like fronds, this epiphytic fern brings a bit of the wild indoors with its shimmery, grey-green foliage.

Native to the rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia, it naturally grows on tree trunks, soaking up moisture and nutrients from the air and fallen debris. It doesn’t actually need soil, which helps make it a great candidate for mounting on wood, but it's also just as happy in a well-draining mix. It loves humidity and bright, indirect light, and prefers a good soak when the fronds start to feel dry.

How to care for Platycerium Bifurcatum

  • Lighting: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Keep out of direct sun to prevent frond scorch.
  • Watering: Water when the mounting medium or soil is dry to the touch. Soak thoroughly, then let it drain fully.
  • Humidity: Enjoys high humidity – mist regularly or keep in a humid spot like a bathroom.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures. Keep above 12°C and avoid cold draughts.
  • Soil Preference: Best planted in a very loose, chunky mix, we use an Anthurium and Orchid Mix. We also mount our staghorns using Sphagnum Moss and a plank of cork bark!
  • Good to Know: Those flat, round basal fronds might look a bit strange and ugly, but don’t remove them – they help anchor and feed the plant!

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
