Nicknamed the 'Cast Iron' plant, the Aspidistra Elatior is one of the most resilient houseplants out there. Becoming popular in Victorian Britain for being able to survive cold, dark and sutty houses, you can understand how this plant has earned its nickname.

This plant is native to Southern Japan and Taiwan, and is tolerant of low light, irregular temperatures and inconsistent watering. As long as you make sure not to overwater, and you keep it out of intense direct sun, the Cast Iron plant can tolerate pretty much anything.

If you're looking to start your indoor gardening journey with something simple and non-intimidating, or you've got a shady corner that is in need of some green to liven it up, the Aspisistra Elatior is the perfect choice for you.

How to care for Aspidistra Elatior

  • Lighting: Can tolerate shade, but will thrive in bright, filtered light.
  • Watering: Make sure the soil is almost completely dry before watering again. Be particularly careful when in a shadier spot.
  • Humidity: Can tolerate all humidity levels, from low, to ambient to high.
  • Temperature: Thrives better in colder temperatures, best in ranges of 10-20°C, but can tolerate as low as 5°C.
  • Soil Preference: A chunky and airy mix is best for this plant, which likes it on the dryer side but still needs something for its roots to grip onto. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: Naturally slow growing, don't expect much growth if placing in a very low light spot.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
