Essential Terrarium Components

Choose a clear, clean glass container, either open or lidded. The type of container affects humidity levels and the kinds of plants you can grow. Closed containers suit tropical plants that love high humidity, while open containers are better for succulents or cacti.

A drainage layer at the bottom keeps excess water away from plant roots, preventing rot. You can use gravel, sand, lava rock, or a mix. This layer is vital for plant health, especially in closed terrariums.

Activated charcoal helps filter the soil and water, preventing mould and the buildup of impurities. A thin layer above your drainage material will help keep the environment clean and healthy.

A fresh, dry, well-draining soil mix gives plants their base to root into. We recommend using our Terrarium soil mix.

The fun bit! Pick humidity-loving, small-growing plants like ferns, fittonias, pileas, and begonias for closed terrariums. Choose plants with finer root systems and slower growth so you're not constantly having to maintain. Always consider the size and humidity level of your container when selecting plants.

Moss isn’t just decorative, it helps maintain high humidity levels and fills in gaps between your plants. Sheet moss and cushion moss are both great choices for most terrariums.

Add personality with bark, stones, grit, or even miniature figurines. These elements will bring character to your terrarium and help create a more naturalistic or imaginative scene.

Some Helpful Tools

  • Tweezers / Long Tongs: For precise planting and placing decorations.
  • Small Shovel or Scoop: Makes it easier to add soil and gravel into narrow containers.
  • Small Brush / Paint Brush: Perfect for cleaning debris off the inside of the glass.
  • Watering Can or Spray Bottle: Ideal for gently watering and misting your plants after setup.

Final Tip

Building a terrarium is part science, part art. Don’t be afraid to get creative! Layer your components carefully, but let your personality shine through with your plant and decor choices. There's no one perfect way to build a terrarium, just do what looks and feels right to you.
