The Calathea Rufibarba may not be like your typical Calathea with contrasting leaf patterns, but what it lacks in pattern it makes up for in texture. This plant, with long dark frilly green leaves and purple undersides, has fine hairs all over, making it velvety soft to the touch. When cared for correctly, the Rufibarba will grow bushy and full, providing you with a perfect rainforest vibe.

Native to the tropics of Central and South America, this plant thrives in a bright and humid environment. Avoid temperature fluctuations and direct light, and this plant should thrive in your care.

With its textural interest and architectural growth pattern, the Calathea Rufibarba is sure to make an impact in any home.

How to care for Calathea Rufibarba

  • Lighting: Bright, filtered light, avoid direct sun. North facing windowsills are best, or pulled back from an East or West.
  • Watering: Water once top inch of soil is dry. Do not let the pot dry out completely.
  • Humidity: Benefits from a boost of humidity. Avoid radiators and cold draughts.
  • Temperature: Cannot tolerate temperature and humidity flucuations. Keep at around 18-24°C for happy growth.
  • Soil Preference: Moisture retention is key. We recommend the Calathea & Maranta mix.
  • Good to Know: When leaves curl inwards and upwards this may be a sign of too much light and now enough water.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
