Phlebodium Aureum ‘Blue Star’ is a bold fern, with wavy, blue-green fronds that fan out like a little plant waterfall. Its unusual colour and ruffled texture give it a slightly prehistoric charm and make it stand out in any plant collection.

Native to the tropical forests of Central America and South America, the Blue Star Fern naturally grows on trees, soaking up moisture from the air and fallen debris. It loves humidity and prefers the soil to stay lightly moist, so don’t let it completely dry out. That said, it’s more forgiving than many ferns and has a surprisingly hardy attitude. The powder on the leaves, which gives it its blue hue, acts as a sort of sunscreen, meaning it can tolerate a lot higher light levels than most of our other ferns. We recommend placing this fern by a sunny windowsill, but if you can't, then wash off it's 'sunscreen' to give it more chance of photosynthesis.

Pop it on a shelf where it can spill out in all directions, or give it a bright bathroom spot where the steam will keep it happy. With the right care, this fern grows generously, turning any corner into a mini rainforest.

How to care for Phlebodium Aureum 'Blue Star Fern'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light to gentle direct. Near East or West facing windows would suit best.
  • Watering: Water once the top couple of inches soil is looking dry. This one likes it moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Humidity: Can grow in average household humidity, but will grow quicker and fuller in higher levels. Avoid placing near radiators or draughts.
  • Temperature: Resilient to temperature fluctuations, but thrives in 15-24°C.
  • Soil Preference: A mix which replicates the epiphytic nature. Something airy, loose and moisture retentive. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: The blue-hue on this plant is a powder which helps stop the plant from scorching its leaves in high light.

Why Phlebodium Aureum 'Blue Star' is our plant of the month

Winter is in full swing, so it makes sense to go with an icy blue plant for our Plant of the Month pick. Welcome to the stage, the gorgeous ‘Blue Star’ Fern. Icy in colour but never in character, and certainly not in care. Sadly, when you are a houseplant shop that sells tropical plants, there's rarely a plant completely tolerant of our cold winters here in the UK.

It may be a fern, but do not be scared. We are giving you the opportunity to challenge yourself this year and get your gardening game on point for 2026. This fern is not as fussy as some, and if it is cared for properly you will be rewarded with bright, large, frilly leaves which can reach up to a metre in length. We have one on our kitchen windowsill at home (north-west facing) and it has doubled in size over just one summer.

Typically, ferns are known for tolerating low light, but this is not entirely true. They are often all clumped together as needing the same care, but with over 10,000 extant species of fern recorded, they clearly cannot all have the same needs.

We absolutely love this fern for many reasons: the colour of its leaves, the cute fluffy rhizomes those lovely leaves grow out of, its ease of care, its ability to size up quickly, its less demanding watering routine… the list goes on. It truly is a beautiful plant, and part of a group of plants that have been growing for millions of years, long before flowering plants existed. As we move into a new year, why not celebrate by choosing a fern as our Plant of the Month? If anyone knows about the passing of time, it's those guys.
