The Schlumbergera Truncata, commonly known as 'Holiday Cactus', 'False Christmas Cactus' or 'Thanksgiving Cactus', is an epiphytic cacti found growing in the coastal mountains of South-Eastern Brazil. Unlike your dessert cacti, this genus enjoys humidity and doesn't need as much direct sun to be happy. When in bloom, this plant can be wuite thirsty, so water once the soil is over halfway dry.

This genus is popular due to its flowers, which bloom once temperatures drop and light is reduced. This is, in the Northern Hemisphere, typically around Autumn / Winter, which is where the nickname comes from. However, if cared for consistently they may flower more than once a year. You can even trick them to flower earlier by reducing their light. The flowers themselves are bright in colour, and have a two-tiered, tubular shape which opens up into a star-like shape at the end.

The Holiday Cactus make great gifts, due to their ease of care and the time of year in which they flower - bringing a bright pop of colour to the shorted, darker days.

How to care for Schlumbergera Truncata

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light is best, with a couple hours of direct sun. South, East or West facing windowsills, or under grow lights are best.
  • Watering: Water once soil is all mostly dried out. When in bloom, don't let sit dry for too long.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 50% above, but can tolerate average household humidity.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 18-24°C. With autumn / winter temperatures around 12-25°C.
  • Soil Preference: To suit their epiphytic nature, Schlumbergeras need a loose and chunky mix. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: Schulmbergeras can bloom multiple times a year is cared for correctly. But their regular blooms happen when temperatures drops and light is reduced. You can encourage blooming by changing these conditions.

Why Schlumbergera Truncata is our plant of the month

I feel more pressure choosing December’s Plant of the Month than any other. Because it’s the last one of the year, it feels like it should symbolise the year in some way, or at least round things off nicely. I don’t really know what the perfect plant for that would be, so instead I’ve gone for a classic – the holiday cactus. We always sell Schlumbergeras at this time of year and they always fly off the shelves, so I thought it was about time we celebrated them.

Of course, the growing season (April to September) brings us most of our colour and growth, so it’s lovely when we can enjoy a plant that blooms in winter. As I’m writing this, I’m sitting next to mine (which was given to me as a small cutting by one of you at one of our plant swaps!) and admiring its seven flamboyant, pale pink blooms.

But it’s not only the blooms that make this plant such a winner. It’s also wonderfully easy to care for, especially considering the high drama it can give. And it can even develop a pink or purple sun tan in high light. This doesn’t damage the foliage – it simply gives the new growth a deeper colour. Even beyond that, the leaf shape alone is incredible and bizarre. We truly love this plant and how it brings a bit of ridiculousness to the colder, darker months.

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
