Begonia Ferox
Native to China where it creeps along the forest floor and limestone outcrops, the Begonia Ferox is the perfect plant for someone who appreciates the weird and wonderful.
Growing from a thick, fleshy red stem, this plant pushes out hairy leaves that when mature display spikes or 'bullae' on the leaves. Although they look sharp, these plants are actually very soft and fuzzy, and their spikes hollow. Although we wouldn't recommend this for someone who is completely new to houseplants, the Ferox is not as difficult as it may look and if you are wanting to expand your collection with a few weirdos, this Begonia should definitely be on the list. Make sure they're in bright light, high humidity and not overwatered, and you will likely watch your Ferox grow big and bushy.
One of our favourite things about this plant is how easy it is to propagate. You can take cuttings from the stem, petiole and leaves, and grow in a variety of substrates like water, moss and perlite.
