Native to China where it creeps along the forest floor and limestone outcrops, the Begonia Ferox is the perfect plant for someone who appreciates the weird and wonderful.

Growing from a thick, fleshy red stem, this plant pushes out hairy leaves that when mature display spikes or 'bullae' on the leaves. Although they look sharp, these plants are actually very soft and fuzzy, and their spikes hollow. Although we wouldn't recommend this for someone who is completely new to houseplants, the Ferox is not as difficult as it may look and if you are wanting to expand your collection with a few weirdos, this Begonia should definitely be on the list. Make sure they're in bright light, high humidity and not overwatered, and you will likely watch your Ferox grow big and bushy.

One of our favourite things about this plant is how easy it is to propagate. You can take cuttings from the stem, petiole and leaves, and grow in a variety of substrates like water, moss and perlite.

How to care for Begonia Ferox

  • Lighting: Intense light will cause the leaves to burn. East or North windows are best, where light is soft and filtered.
  • Watering: Water once top couple of inches of soil is dry. Waterlogged soil can quickly lead to rot as so much of this plant grows very close to the soil.
  • Humidity: High humidity is beneficial to this plant, and is best in levels of 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Cannot tolerate temperature fluctuations or cold drafts. Maintain temperatures around 18-20°C for consistent growth.
  • Soil Preference: A mixture of fine and thick substrates to promote air circulation. We recommend the Syngonium mix.
  • Good to Know: A longer pot works well for this crawling Begonia, which grows sideways not upwards.

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
