The Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' is a rare but easy-care plant, perfect for those who are looking to expand their plant collection with a standout gem. This plant can change quickly over time. As it matures, each leaf produces deeper lobes which begin to resemble flames (hence the name). A mature plant displays lobes that almost touch the midrib of the leaf, creating a very sculptural and delicate-looking plant.

Although it's origin is speculative, it is linked to the private plant collection of Roberto Burle Marx, a Brazilian landscape architect, celebrated for his modernist botanical designs and his work in conservation for the rainforests of Brazil.

How to care for Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light, with gentle direct. East or West facing, pulled back from South facing windows, or under grow lights is best.
  • Watering: Wait for top third of soil to dry before watering.
  • Humidity: Enjoys 50% and above humidity.
  • Temperature: No drastic temperature drops, this may lead to black spots or browning on new leaves. Keep around 16-26°C for consistent growth.
  • Soil Preference: Something chunky and airy, with moisture retentive properties, to suit their thick roots and high humidity needs. We recommend the Monstera & Philodendron mix.
  • Good to Know: Loves having something to climb, whether that be a wooden post, a moss pole, or even the wall.

Why Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' are our plant of the month

The 'Burle Marx Flame' has been popular for a while now, but has been inaccessible to most for most of that time due to crazy high price tags, and relative scarcity. Recently, thanks to developments in tissue culture, this beautiful Monstera has become more readily available, and so we thought this would be the perfect chance to celebrate it as our POTM!

A couple of weeks ago we visited a friend of ours, Suki, who lives in a beautiful apartment covered in the most happy and healthy houseplants. We instantly fell in love with his Burle Marx, with its the thick, angular leaves but compact growth. We're big fans of fenestrations here at The Watered Garden and this plant is a perfect example of how extreme they can become; these leaves change so much as it matures. Deep lobes creating leaves which resemble flames make this plant so unique in its genus, they're nothing like any other Monstera. We find this plant to be so visually intriguing that we had to give it a Plant of the Month spot.
