Humata Tyermannii, often nicknamed the White Rabbit’s Foot Fern, is a quirky little plant that’s full of character. With delicate, feathery fronds and soft, fuzzy rhizomes that creep over the edge of the pot like little white paws, it’s one of those plants that people always have a double take at in the shop.

Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this fern grows epiphytically, meaning it’s used to living on other plants or trees rather than in the ground. It thrives in bright, indirect light, loves humidity, and prefers its soil to be lightly moist. If you forget to water it, it might throw a bit of a tantrum with crispy tips, but it bounces back quickly with a little TLC.

How to care for Humata Tyermannii

  • Lighting: Bright, filtered light is best. Can tolerate some lower light, but avoid direct sun.
  • Watering: Let the top inch or two dry out before watering again. Enjoys consistent moisture but doesn't want to stay soggy.
  • Humidity: Will thrive in higher humidity, but can tolerate average household humidity levels.
  • Temperature: Avoid temperatures below 10°C. 18-24°C is ideal.
  • Soil Preference: A chunky but moisture retentive soil is best. The perfect blend we recommend is 50% Fern mix, and 50% Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: The 'feet' are how this plant spreads, pushing new leaves and roots from these points. Separating the feet is the best way to propagate, but make sure to boost the humidity when cuttings are young.

Why Humata Tyermannii is our plant of the month

Even though we haven't been growing the Tyermannii at The Watered Garden for long, in the short time it has been here, we have fallen in love with it twice over. We are often drawn to weird and wonderful plants and this is certainly both of those things. While you could argue that the nickname should be 'Tarantula Legs' and not 'Rabbits Foot', you can't argue that these 'feet' (rhizomes) are the stand out feature of this fascinating fern.

Because of this feature, it means you can display this plant in so many interesting ways; playing with its epiphytic nature through Kokedama or mounted displays; or just placing in a statement pot to watch the rhizomes cascade over and around it.

Don't let that its a fern scare you, we have found it to be resilient in temperature and humidity fluctuations. It puts up a fight much more than other popular ferns grown indoors. We highly recommend you give this lil weirdo a try!
