Although the name might be a mouthful, everything else about this Maranta is easy going and a joy to grow. Typically nicknamed 'prayer plant' due to the movement of its leaves in the morning and evening, this is a delicate but dramatic edition to those who have just started with plants, or those with plants in the triple digits.

Growing from thin purple and green stems, these plants produce paddle-shaped, pale green leaves, painted with dark brown splotches (which look like brush strokes), on each leaf. This variety is variegated, meaning it produces sporadic patches of white and cream, (and sometimes pink and orange), on the leaves as well as, and often over the top of the dark brown splotching. This variegation makes every new leaf a surprise, and can create some fun pops of colour on each individual leaf.

Marantas, known for their moisture-loving tendencies, natively grow in the humid forests of Brazil, where they grow bushy along the floor, receiving very gentle dappled light. When growing as a houseplant, make sure the soil is consistently moist but never water-logged. Place away from radiators or draughts, where the air can be very dry, and avoid intense direct sun.

How to care for Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light to bright shade. Avoid direct sun. Not enough light may cause the variegation to decrease.
  • Watering: Keep moisture consistent by watering when top layer of soil has dried.
  • Humidity: Prefers 50% and above. Avoid placing near radiators and draughts.
  • Temperature: In the range of 18-24°C is best. Avoid temperatures below 15°C.
  • Soil Preference: A moisture retentive mix that supports fine root systems. We recommend the Calathea & Maranta mix.
  • Good to Know: Marantas can produce small purple flowers, but we recommend cutting them off to encourage more leaf growth. The plant will put a lot of energy into producing flowers, and this can halt the overall growth of the plant.

Why Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata is our plant of the month

March is an exciting month, when we start to see spring creeping in. White and pink blossoms begin to decorate the streets, parks and gardens, bulbs pop their heads out of the soil in quick succession, and the days stretch out a little longer. It is time to celebrate the colour and light we are about to receive, and reflect on how to make the most of the brighter seasons ahead. This sense of lightness and colour is reflected in our Plant of the Month pick.

The Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana Variegata’ is an underrated gem. It is low maintenance, easy to propagate, and a delight to watch grow. It was one of my first ‘fancy’ plants, which I bought back in 2019 when they cost a lot more than they do now. I was, and still am, obsessed with the delicate variegation and subtle splashes of colour that appear on each leaf. Sometimes, when the variegation lays over the dark brown splotches, it creates a sepia tone. Sometimes it shifts completely from dark brown to baby pink. What is not to enjoy about that?

It is one of those plants that gives you so much to look at and enjoy, but is not too boisterous or demanding. Its song and dance is quieter, but in no way less exciting. As spring begins, bringing gentle light and small specks of magic, we want to celebrate the subtle magic and array of colours this lovely little Maranta has to offer.
