The Nepenthes 'Gaya' is the perfect carnivorous plant to start with if you're thinking of building a carnivorous collection. The result of hybridising 3 Nepenthes species together, the Gaya is an easy care pitcher plant, more tolerant of temperature drops and more resilient to inconsistent watering than others in the genus. However, most Nepenthes originate from Southeast Asia, where temperatures are warm and the air is humid. Therefore, if you want your Gaya to thrive, keeping humidity, temperature and soil moisture consistent all year round will help keep this unusual plants happy.

Carnivorous plants originally adapted to the poor soil quality of their natural habitat by forming passive traps for prey to fall into. The lid of the pitchers produces a sweet nectar which lures the prey into the slippery mouth of the Nepenthes. Due to downward pointed hairs and slippery walls, once the prey has fallen into the pitcher, it is almost impossible to get out again. The liquid at the bottom of the 'cups' slowly dissolves the prey and takes their nutrients. Some species have adapted to extract nutrients from bat and bird faeces, as well as leaf matter.

How to care for Nepenthes 'Gaya'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light, avoid direct sun. North facing windows or near and East or West works well.
  • Watering: Water with rainwater once top soil is starting to feel dry. Avoid water-logging.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 16-26°C. Avoid temperatures of 10°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: A loose and airy mix to ensure roots stay moist but not wet. We recommend mixing sphagnum moss and bark into the Base mix.
  • Good to Know: These grow in hot and humid habitats, so when grown indoors it is important to have it growing somewhere warm all year round.
