Phlebodium Aureum ‘Blue Star’ is a bold fern, with wavy, blue-green fronds that fan out like a little plant waterfall. Its unusual colour and ruffled texture give it a slightly prehistoric charm and make it stand out in any plant collection.

Native to the tropical forests of Central America and South America, the Blue Star Fern naturally grows on trees, soaking up moisture from the air and fallen debris. It loves humidity and prefers the soil to stay lightly moist, so don’t let it completely dry out. That said, it’s more forgiving than many ferns and has a surprisingly hardy attitude. The powder on the leaves, which gives it its blue hue, acts as a sort of sunscreen, meaning it can tolerate a lot higher light levels than most of our other ferns. We recommend placing this fern by a sunny windowsill, but if you can't, then wash off it's 'sunscreen' to give it more chance of photosynthesis.

Pop it on a shelf where it can spill out in all directions, or give it a bright bathroom spot where the steam will keep it happy. With the right care, this fern grows generously, turning any corner into a mini rainforest.

How to care for Phlebodium Aureum 'Blue Star Fern'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light to gentle direct. Near East or West facing windows would suit best.
  • Watering: Water once the top couple of inches soil is looking dry. This one likes it moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Humidity: Can grow in average household humidity, but will grow quicker and fuller in higher levels. Avoid placing near radiators or draughts.
  • Temperature: Resilient to temperature fluctuations, but thrives in 15-24°C.
  • Soil Preference: A mix which replicates the epiphytic nature. Something airy, loose and moisture retentive. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: The blue-hue on this plant is a powder which helps stop the plant from scorching its leaves in high light.
