We think this Anthurium is the perfect blend of old school Anthuriums, once popular for their shiny, alien like flowers, and the more on trend Anthuriums of today, loved for their large leaves and intense venation. The ‘Queen of Hearts’ isn’t about velvety textures or bold vein contrast. Instead, it stands out for its deep red black colour palette and reptilian like aesthetic.

What can feel like a fairly understated plant when young really packs a punch as it matures. New growth emerges in a bright blood red before hardening off to a near black. As the plant grows, leaf size increases too, producing large, heart shaped leaves with a shiny, pillowy texture.

The origin of this plant isn’t entirely clear, but it isn’t one you would find in the wild. If you are looking to add something a little more unusual to your collection, this is a top pick. Give it warm, humid conditions and a chunky, well draining soil, and you will be rewarded with those dramatic red black heart shaped leaves in no time.

How to care for Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts'

  • Lighting: Enjoys bright, filtered light. Near East or West facing windows is best. They do brilliantly under grow lights. Direct sun will scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Doesn't like waterlogged soil, but enjoys consistent moisture. Water thoroughly once top quarter of the pot has dried out.
  • Humidity: 70% or above is best. Will thrive best in greenhouse or terrarium conditions. Avoid radiators and draughts.
  • Temperature: Will thrive best in temperatures ranging from 18-26°C.
  • Soil Preference: An airy and chunky mix to suit the Anthuriums' thick roots and epiphytic growth habit. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: Anthuriums enjoy regular repotting if you want to get consistent and larger growth. We recommend every 1 - 1.5 years.

Why Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' is our plant of the month

For the past two years, our February Plant of the Month pick has been heart shaped. A little on the nose, we know, but we might as well stick to our guns and start a tradition. We've been wanting to do an Anthurium as our Plant of the Month for ages, and February, the month of love, felt fitting for a genus filled with huge heart shaped leaves. However, the ‘Queen of Hearts’ is a little different from the classic heart shaped Anthuriums. It's not your typical Valentine’s heart. Nothing cutesy and soft. This one is for gothic romantics.

Anthuriums in general are a joy to grow. With so many varieties that span all shapes and sizes, it's a genus that can catch the eye of any indoor gardener, no matter their level of experience. We love them for their deep colour palettes, buttery leaf textures, and ability to size up quickly. Watching each new leaf unfurl is always so exciting!

The ‘Queen of Hearts’ is almost reptilian like in texture, with venation that looks like scales. On a younger plant, new leaves come in a deep blood red or earthy copper before fading to green. As the plant matures, these new leaves get darker and darker, unfurling in that same red but hardening off to a near black!

The burgundy and black tones of this plant are truly what you'll fall in love with. It's easy care, aesthetically dramatic, and a great introduction to the Anthurium genus. We are super excited to have this Queen as our Plant of the Month.
