The Begonia Masoniana 'Rock' is a cultivar of the Iron Cross Begonia with the inverted pattern and colour palette of it's other popular cultivar, the 'Boulder'. We love this cultivar for its fuzzy texture, deep colour contrasts and it's fairly sturdy growth habit. Although, we wouldn't say it's the easiest begonia to start with, it definitely isn't as intimidating as it looks!

The Iron Cross Begonia is native to the humid, rocky limestone regions of China and Vietnam. They like it warm and humid, with ample amounts of bright indirect light. It is important with these Begonias to ensure the top soil is dry before watering, as the main stem is prone to rot if sat in waterlogged soil. A loose and well-draining soil is also key.

How to care for Begonia Masoniana 'Rock'

  • Lighting: Intense light will cause the leaves to burn. Bright but indirect is best.
  • Watering: Water once top couple of inches of soil is dry.
  • Humidity: High humidity is beneficial to this plant, and is best in levels of 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures around 18-24°C for healthy growth.
  • Soil Preference: A fine mix to support fine roots. We recommend the Fern mix.
  • Good to Know: This is a thirsty plant which will get crispy leaf tips when watered inconsistently.
