Nicknamed 'Blue Spikemoss' or 'Peacock Moss', the Selaginella Uncinata is not a moss at all, but a low-growing plant native to southern China. Perfect for terrariums, this shade loving creeper displays a metallic blue-green hue on its leaves, which spread and fan out like moss.

The Uncinata grows aerial roots along the main stems very quickly, making it an extremely easy plant to propagate. We take cuttings from our mother plant to pot up and use in our terrariums; we are now sharing these propagations with you, so you can add them to your terrariums / collections.

If you are wanting to grow this Blue Spikemoss outside of a terrarium (which can be done), then we recommend keeping it out of direct sun, as these are low-growing plants in their natural habitat, not used to any intense light. Keep consistent moisture and boost the humidity, by placing it next to other plants or on a pebble tray.

How to care for Selaginella Uncinata

  • Lighting: Bright to dappled light, always avoid direct sun.
  • Watering: Need consistent moisture. Water when top soil has just become dry.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Best kept in a terrarium or cabinet.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperature ranges between 12–26°C.
  • Soil Preference: A fine but moisture retentive soil. We recommend the Terrarium mix.
  • Good to Know: The metallic blue colouring on the leaves can darken to a brownish hue if the plant is receiving too much light.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
