Hoya Linearis is one of our absolute favourites here at The Watered Garden; a plant that instantly brings the jungle into your home! The bright green succulent leaves, which are covered in fine hairs and resemble runner beans, cascade down delicate vines, and when mature, push out white star-shaped flowers that grow in clusters.

Although Hoyas typically like to tendril and grow around and onto things, the Linearis grows straight down, making it perfect for narrow or vertically spacious areas that are in need of some green.

This Hoya is native to the Himalayas, particularly the tropical monsoon areas of the region. This means the Linearis needs a lot of humidity and consistent temperatures to truly thrive and is best placed in a kitchen or bathroom where the humidity is naturally higher in most homes. Although this plant likes a lot of moisture, indoors you want to make sure the soil has time to dry out a little in between waterings. Often the leaves look darker or duller when the plant is really in need of a drink.

How to care for Hoya Linearis

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light. Avoid intense direct sun for long periods of time.
  • Watering: Once the top third of soil is dry.
  • Humidity: Happy in average household humidity but will thrive in higher humidity. Avoid radiators and cold drafts (this may cause leaf drop).
  • Temperature: 18-24°C is best. Avoid temperatures of 10°C or below for long periods of time.
  • Soil Preference: Something chunky and loose to replicate their epiphytic growth habit. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: This plant is covered in fine hairs which help catch humidity. The leaves should look plump and slightly shiny when they're at their happiest.

Why Hoya Linearis is our plant of the month

Now it is hard to have a favourite plant when you run a plant shop. You're constantly surrounded by new and interesting plants, some of which you used to dislike but now love after seeing them everyday. If someone asks I normally say it changes all the time, which is true but there are always some top contenders. If I had to pick my top 3 plants of all time, I think this POTM would be in there. I will never not be in love with the Hoya Linearis.

I remember when I first discovered this plant - only having one Hoya before it - it was like nothing I had seen before. A trailing plant that really TRAILS. It's so jungly, the most satisfying green you've ever seen, and soft and fuzzy to the touch?!

Such an easy care plant, which can grow extremely long in a fairly short time. If you know Hoyas, then you know that this isn't the case with a lot of them. They typically take agaes to establish and only push new growth out when they have an excess of energy.

All of that, and then it also flowers. I mean, come on?! Clusters of white star shaped flowers (called Peduncles!!), which dangle down like little chandeliers. We hope you love the Hoya Linearis as much as us, and if not, we don't think we could handle it so don't tell us.
