Hoya Mathilde is a beloved hoya for many reasons. First of all, it's dark green and glossy, button-like leaves, speckled with silver markings, are something to admire. Secondly, the beautiful flowers which bloom into white fuzzy stars with hot pink centres. And if those two reasons don't cut it, the third reason, is that Hoya Mathilde is one of the easiest Hoyas to take care of, due to its forgiving and robust nature. It is even more low light tolerant than most hoyas, due to its dark green leaves. Keep in mind however, that if you want to make this Hoya bloom, it is more likely to do so in higher light.

This Hoya is not a natural species, but instead a hybrid cultivar. It came about through crossing Hoya Carnosa (your classic Hoya species, known for it's resilience and fast growth) with the dainty Hoya Serpens (the reason for the Mathilde's dinkier leaf shape). Both of these Hoyas can be found in Southeast Asia.

How to care for Hoya Mathilde

  • Lighting: This is a shade tolerant Hoya but bright, indirect light is best. North, East or West facing windowsills work well.
  • Watering: Water once soil has dried.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 50% above, but can tolerate average household humidity.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 18-26°C. Avoid temperatures of 12°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: To suit their epiphytic nature, Hoyas need a loose and chunky mix. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: This Hoya will still grow even if it doesn't receive some direct sun. However, to encourage flowering, we recommend regular feeding and a couple hours of gentle direct sun.
