The 'Holly Fern' is a wonderfully hardy fern which is one of our faves in the shop when it comes to low light tolerance.

Native to parts of China, Korea and Japan, this plant gets its nickname from it's Holly-shaped leaves, with grow from thin black stems. Found growing on forest floors, this plant likes it consistently moist, and is very happy in shaded areas.

If you love ferns but struggle to keep them happy, maybe try the Cyrtomium Fortunei before you give up entirely on the genus. These are resilient and reliable while still giving you that delicate and prehistoric look ferns are so known for. Plus, they are pet-safe and air-purifying. This is a real winner in our eyes.

How to care for Cyrtomium Fortunei 'Holly Fern'

  • Lighting: Avoid direct sun, this plant likes it shady. North facing windows are best, but can be placed near an East or West facing window as well.
  • Watering: Water once the top soil is looking dry. This one likes it moist.
  • Humidity: Can grow in average household humidity, but will grow quicker and fuller in higher levels.
  • Temperature: Resilient to temperature fluctuations, but thrives in 15-24°C. Can tolerate drops below 10°C but only for short periods.
  • Soil Preference: A moisture retentive mix that is made up of fine and loose substrates. We recommend the Fern mix.
  • Good to Know: These reproduce through the dispersal of spores which are very noticeable on the undersides of the leaves.
