Pilea Depressa is a teeny-tiny trailing wonder, with delicate round leaves that grow along thin, sprawling stems. It creates a soft, textured mat of green that’s perfect for tumbling over the edges of pots or weaving through a terrarium. It’s fast-growing, charmingly wild, and terrific to propagate.

Native to Central and South America, this Pilea loves humidity and soft, dappled light - imagine it crawling along the forest floor. Keep the soil lightly moist, but avoid waterlogging, and give it a bit of room to stretch out. If it starts to get too leggy, just give it a little haircut, it’ll bounce back with even more lush growth.

We pop this one in terrariums all the time, where it creeps and trails beautifully around other plants. It’s also lovely in a small hanging pot or perched high on a shelf.

How to care for Pilea Depressa

  • Lighting: Bright, dappled light. Can tolerate some gentle direct sun. East or West facing windows are best.
  • Watering: Once majority of pot is dry. Leaves look duller and less plump when thirsty.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity, but can tolerate average household levels.
  • Temperature: Best in around 15-24°C. Sensitive to cold draughts.
  • Soil Preference: Something loose but fine. We recommend the Syngonium mix, or the Terrarium mix.
  • Good to Know: If growing in a terrarium, you could take a stem cutting, place it in some soil, and it will root within days!

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
