The Alocasia Scalprum is a striking tropical plant, popular for its reptilian texture and deep colour palette. Found growing on the tropical island of Samar in the Philippines, this Alocasia thrives in the warm and humid climate of its rainforests, displaying dark green, lance-shaped leaves and thick, deep purple stems. The leaves are leathery in texture, and patterned with a scaly texture.

Like all Alocasias, the Scalprum benefits from lots of bright light and a consistent watering routine. Sudden drops in temperature will shock this plant, and even cause it to die back until temperatures rise, so if your house is cold and draughty, this sadly might not be the best plant for you.

However, if you like the weird and wonderful, and you're used to growing tropical plants, then why not give this one a try. Its a plant that's hard to look away from.

How to care for Alocasia Scalprum

  • Lighting: Needs a lot of light, but avoid intense direct. Best in East or West facing windows, or pulled back from a South.
  • Watering: A thirsty plant, but quick to rot if overwatered. Water once the top quarter of soil is dry. Using soil-less substrates like Semi-Hydro can make this easier.
  • Humidity: Can handle average household humidity, but thrives in 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Keep in 18°C or above for consistent growth. May die back in winter if in temperatures of 13°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: Has a lot of moisture retentive properties, with a mix of fine and coarse components. We recommend the Alocasia mix. Or Semi-Hydro for soil-less growing.
  • Good to Know: The Scalprum is endemic to the island of Samar, and is relatively new to the houseplant world, only being officially recognised in the 80s and formally described in 1999.
