The word 'Amphioxus' means pointed at both ends, in reference to the narrow, pointed leaves this Begonia produces. If you like spotty Begonias, then you may want to try this little weirdo. Lime green leaves, with bright red spots and leaf edges, the Begonia Amphioxus looks like a poisonous frog in plant form.

Native to Borneo, you will find this plant growing on limestone cliffs, under the canopy in tropical rainforests. A more delicate and petite growing plant compared to other cane Begonias, the Amphioxus will only reach 40-60cm in length, with a max leaf size of under 10cm.

We recommend planting these in terrariums, where light is bright but not intense and humidity is high. Their sharp colour palette and petite growth habit, make for the perfect statement plant in your next enclosed ecosystem.

How to care for Begonia Amphioxus

  • Lighting: Intense light will cause the leaves to burn. East or North windows are best, where light is soft and filtered.
  • Watering: Water once top quarter of soil is dry. Waterlogged soil can quickly lead to rot but dry soil can cause permanent leaf damage.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 60% or above is beneficial to this plant. We recommend growing in terrariums or greenhouse conditions.
  • Temperature: Cannot tolerate temperature fluctuations or cold drafts. Maintain temperatures around 18-27°C for healthy growth.
  • Soil Preference: Something to support both fine roots and humidity loving plants. We recommend the Terrarium mix.
  • Good to Know: Can easily be propagated in either water or moss via stem cuttings.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
