Begonia Goegoensis
Native to Goego in Sumatra, Indonesia, this incredible Begonia, Begonia Goegoensis, is one of our favourites at The Watered Garden, thanks to its colour, texture, growth habit, and the many ways you can propagate it. If you’re looking to add something unusual to your next terrarium, or want to expand your collection with some rare oddities, this may be the one for you.
This Begonia produces egg-shaped leaves with bronze and neon green markings, framed by fine red hairs along the edges and a rich, earthy red on the undersides. New growth emerges a vivid, deep red, and when the leaves catch the light, they shimmer beautifully.
These thrive best in greenhouses and terrariums where humidity is high and lighting is bright but indirect. We find these Begonias to be thirsty yet fragile, so take care not to overwater. Their delicate root system doesn’t respond well to regular repotting, so we recommend keeping root disturbance to a minimum.
Although not ideal for beginners, with the right light and a good bit of humidity, the Goegoensis can grow quickly, each new leaf emerging slightly larger and more defined than the last.
