Native to Goego in Sumatra, Indonesia, this incredible Begonia, Begonia Goegoensis, is one of our favourites at The Watered Garden, thanks to its colour, texture, growth habit, and the many ways you can propagate it. If you’re looking to add something unusual to your next terrarium, or want to expand your collection with some rare oddities, this may be the one for you.

This Begonia produces egg-shaped leaves with bronze and neon green markings, framed by fine red hairs along the edges and a rich, earthy red on the undersides. New growth emerges a vivid, deep red, and when the leaves catch the light, they shimmer beautifully.

These thrive best in greenhouses and terrariums where humidity is high and lighting is bright but indirect. We find these Begonias to be thirsty yet fragile, so take care not to overwater. Their delicate root system doesn’t respond well to regular repotting, so we recommend keeping root disturbance to a minimum.

Although not ideal for beginners, with the right light and a good bit of humidity, the Goegoensis can grow quickly, each new leaf emerging slightly larger and more defined than the last.

How to care for Begonia Goegoensis

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light, avoid direct sun. Grows brilliantly under grow lights or near an East or West facing window.
  • Watering: Water once top quarter of pot is dry. Rot can easily spread on roots and main stem if overwatered.
  • Humidity: A humidity loving plant, best grown in a terrarium, greenhouse or glass cabinet. Can grow in 50% but does best in 60% or higher.
  • Temperature: Likes it warm, around 20-30°C. In winter, this plant may go dormant or lose leaves, if left in colder temperatures of 15°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: A fine but loose, moisture retentive mix to support the fine root system. We recommend the Terrarium or Fern mix.
  • Good to Know: You can grow a new plant from a stem cutting, a petiole cutting, and a leaf cutting. Once cut, place in a mixture of moss and perlite, and watch them grow new roots and baby leaves!

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
