Pilea Mollis, also known as the Moon Valley Pilea, is a textured favourite, with deeply quilted leaves that look like they’ve been pressed from velvet. Bright green with bronzy-red veins, these guys are always a head turner when we've got them in the shop.

Native to Central and South America, this compact plant loves humidity and soft, dappled light, which makes it absolutely perfect for terrariums (we use them in ours all the time). It likes its soil to stay lightly moist, and prefers a warm environment without too much direct sun.

With its small size and incredible texture, Pilea Mollis has depth and colour whether in a pot or terrarium and it’s definitely one of those plants that always gets someone asking “ooh, what’s that one?”

How to care for Pilea Mollis

  • Lighting: Bright, dappled light. Avoid intense direct sun.
  • Watering: Water once top layer of soil is dry.
  • Humidity: Best in higher humidity, thrives in terrariums and greenhouses. Can tolerate lower, but avoid placing near heaters or draughts.
  • Temperature: Consistency is key, keeping them in 18-24°C, not letting it drop below 15°C too often.
  • Soil Preference: Loose, but moisture retentive. We recommend the Ficus mix, or the Terrarium mix.
  • Good to Know: This plant can grow from a single leaf! Cut a leaf and slot into the soil, and leaves will grow from the cut.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
