The Aeschynanthus 'Pink Polka' is a beautiful flowering houseplant with round glossy leaves that cascade down from delicate vines. This genus of plant is commonly known as a Lipstick plant, due to the blooms resembling lipsticks. The blooms on this particular variety come out as a pale pink, contrasting perfectly with the bright green succulent leaves.

Native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia, these plants grow epiphytically, meaning they grow off of other plants instead of terrestirally (in soil). Although they like it humid, their succulent leaves make them a fairly easy going plant when it comes to underwatering. However, these are not ones to forget about as a consistent lack of water can cause the main stems to dry out which damages the new growth.

An understated, delicate grower with glossy leaves and pink blooms, perfect for someone interested in adding more soft colours and shapes to their collection. These plants look particularly wonderful growing in a tall and narrow planter, to really emphasise their satisfying growth habit. Once mature, they really make a statement in a hanging pot where they can grow from all directions.

As long as they're provided with bright indirect light, and given a boost of humidity, they can grow quickly and healthy, and even bloom for you in the summer!

How to care for Aeschynanthus 'Pink Polka'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light, too much direct sun can scorch the leaves. Best for East or West facing windows.
  • Watering: Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. It prefers slightly moist soil but hates soggy roots.
  • Humidity: Loves a boost of humidity – mist occasionally or keep in a naturally humid room like a kitchen.
  • Temperature: Happy in average home temperatures but keep away from cold draughts or radiators.
  • Soil Preference: Prefers a chunky, airy mix to replicate its epiphytic growth. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid Mix.
  • Good to Know: To encourage blooming, make sure to regularly fertilise your lipstick plants. You can do this with a foliar feed or by feeding the roots. A standard houseplant fertiliser would be suitable.

Why Aeschynanthus 'Pink Polka' is our plant of the month

As we move into Summer, it is the time to appreciate our flowering plants, and that is exactly what we’re doing with this Plant of the Month pick.

The pastel pink blooms of the ‘Pink Polka’ Lipstick plant are the cherry on top of an already gorgeous cake, contrasting so beautifully with the bright apple-green leaves. However, it is not the flowers that make this plant our top pick for June (although they do typically flower in late Spring, early Summer, so it definitely helped push it to the top of the list), but the way it grows.

There is something so satisfying about a trailing plant that cascades as evenly as this Aeschynanthus. Understated, but glossy and full, with juicy coin-like leaves, we cannot resist this tactile plant!

These plants look especially good delicately trailing from tall, narrow planters. Pot into dark or jewel toned planters to allow the apple green leaves and pastel pink blooms to really pop!
