If you love prayer plants such as Calatheas, but struggle to keep them alive, you should try this much easier and just as dazzling genus!

The 'Red Fire' is a tropical plant, but it's not fussy. For it to thrive, give this plant bright, indirect light, and only water when most of the soil feels dry. You don't need to watch over this one, it is a plant which thrives on neglect and is fine with a slightly shadier and draughty spot than some of your other tropical plants.

Humidity is appreciated but they can withstand average household humidity, just keep it away from radiators so the leaves don't crisp up. We find this genus to be super chill, but they are sensitive to overwatering, due to their thick roots and fleshy stems, so be gentle with your watering schedule. Because of these thick roots, we recommend repotting every 1-2 years in an airy and chunky soil.

Why Aglaonema 'Red Fire' is our plant of the month

I'll be honest.. Aglaonemas have always been one of those genera which I never paid much attention to. But something switched this growing season because now I won't shut up about them. If you are new to Aglaonemas (more commonly nicknamed 'Chinese Evergreen') then let me quickly introduce you: They can tolerate low light, they can tolerate inconsistent watering, and they can tolerate temperature fluctuations.

With this laid-back care routine, you may expect laid-back visuals, but no way honey, they've got big leaves and all the colours! Whether you like deep greens, blue-greens and silver tones, or deep reds and bright pinks, peaches and limes, the colour palette is wide with this one so you're sure to find something you like. And that's not even mentioning leaf shapes and patterns!

So, can you agree, whether you like them or not, Aglaonemas have got a lot to brag about? And that brings me onto the Aglaonema 'Red Fire', which is our November Plant of the Month pick. Hot pink stems, with red, green and yellow leaves. To us, this plant celebrates the colours of autumn. When the days are getting shorter, and the trees are shedding their colour, this Aglaonema will showcase these autumnal hues, in the dark months, as well as the light.

I'll admit, I was a little skeptical at first. As someone who's not massively into colour on their plants, this seems like a rogue choice. But Louis (who is even fussier when it comes to colour than me) really likes the 'Red Fire', saying it reminds him of thermal cameras, and Beckie was in love with the autumnal palette as soon as she saw them. From then I was convinced, lets celebrate colour as the days get a little less colourful. Oh, and it's Bonfire night soon, so the 'Red Fire' name felt very fitting!

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
