The Alocasia Cuprea 'Red Secret' always turns heads, and we have often had to convince customers that it is actually a real plant. From thick, lime green stems, grow shield-shaped leaves which look metallic and not of this world. Depending on the angle you view them from, and how the light is hitting them, they can look red, purple, copper, bronze and deep green. A must-have for any plant collector who loves the weird ones!

Alocasias can be tricky when it comes to watering, as they love moisture but can easily rot, so we wouldn't recommend this to someone who is just starting their indoor gardening journey. However, if you're starting to delve deeper into the weird and wonderful side of indoor gardening this is a real show stopper and is bound to get people talking!

Native to Borneo, this Alocasia (like most of them) thrives in warm and humid conditions. They are light-loving plants, but their leaves are too sensitive for direct sun, so avoid sunny windowsills. Water when top inch of soil is dry, but never let the soil dry out completely. We recommend growing in moss or semi-hydro if you struggle with growing Alocasias in soil.

How to care for Alocasia Cuprea 'Red Secret'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light is best, can tolerate very gentle direct sun. Near East & West facing light, or under grow lights.
  • Watering: Water once top soil is nearly dry.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 50% above. Greenhouse and terrarium settings are best.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 18-26°C. Avoid temperatures of 12°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: To provide these plants with consistent moisture without rotting their roots, we recommend growing Alocasias in Semi-Hydro. But if you prefer soil, we also have an Alocasia soil mix.
  • Good to Know: Alcoasias can lose their older leaves when pushing out new ones. To encourage more leaves to stay on the plant at one time, increasing temperature, humidity, light and nutrients will help provide the plant with enough extra energy to sustain more leaves.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
