The Alocasia Micholitziana, often called the Green Velvet Alocasia, is an undeniably striking plant, with dark green velvety leaves and bright white contrasting veins - it's a plant that stands out no matter where it is in a room. Although Alocasias can be fussy (mainly in the water and temperature department), we find them very easy to care for in the shop.

Native to the island of Luzon in the Phillipines, you will find this Alocasia growing on the forest floor, in dappled light and humid conditions. Due to the high altitude of this environment, temperatures can drop to lows of 10ºC. Although we wouldn't risk these temperatures indoors, it just shows you how tolerant this particular Alocasia is to temperature fluctuations. However, for healthy and consistent growth, we recommend growing in temperatures of around 18ºC or above. We find this Alocasia to be fairly low light tolerant, but again, is best grown in bright conditions if you want to see it thrive. Water when the top third of the pot is dry and you'll have a happy Alocasia.

Its ease of care and stunning visuals, make this Alocasia a top choice if you're wanting to get into the genus. If you like contrasting leaves, or velvet textures, then this is definitely a plant for you. The perfect choice for a statement plant stand near a sunny window.

How to care for Alocasia Micholitziana

  • Lighting: Thrive in bright light, but not direct. Best near East or West facing windows. Grow well under grow lights.
  • Watering: Very thirsty but prone to root rot if overwatered. Water once the top couple inches of soil are dry.
  • Humidity: Can handle average household humidity, but thrives in 60% to 70%. Avoid radiators or heater where air can become dry.
  • Temperature: Keep in 18°C or above for consistent growth. May die back in winter if left in temperatures of 13ºC or below.
  • Soil Preference: Something that supports moisture retention whilst being suitable for thicker roots. We recommend the Alocasia mix. Alocasias grow brilliantly in Semi-Hydro too.
  • Good to Know: You can propagate through harvesting corms in the soil, which when planted in moss will sprout new baby Alocasias.

Why Alocasia Micholitziana is our plant of the month

Why not?! It’s about time we had an Alocasia as our Plant of the Month…

I still long for my old Micholitziana that I sadly lost to thrips in 2021. I bought it back in 2019, and it was one of the most expensive plants I’d ever purchased at the time (they used to sell for a lot more than they do now!). It was one of the rarest plants I owned, and I remember feeling that buzz of excitement - like I’d taken my plant collection to the next level.

It was such a beautiful plant, and it ended up not being as fussy as I’d anticipated. It grew well in mine and Louis’ flat at the time, in a sunny but draughty room - which was a surprise considering everything I’d heard about Alocasias hating cooler temperatures. Over the two years I had it, it grew large and bushy. The leaves (which, to me, look like the Korok from Legend of Zelda - anyone else see it?!) really stood out in my collection, rising above my smaller plants, each leaf bigger than the last.

My thrip infestation in 2021 sadly killed it off, and for some reason I never replaced it. But now, after four years, I’ve gotten over the heartbreak - and we wanna celebrate this gorgeous plant, because it really is a special one. An easy-growing, visually and texturally interesting plant that’s sure to bring you joy.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
