The Alocasia 'Regal Shields' has got to be one of, if not the, easiest Alocasia we've ever grown. Making it the perfect plant to introduce to the genus, that typically can be a bit fussier when it comes to watering. The Regal Shields has never caused us trouble in the shop, and has undergone periods of drought or temperature fluctuations, and still pushed out new large growth each time.

This Alocasia is a hybrid of the 'Odora' and the 'Black Velvet', which are both native to tropical forests in South-East Asia, so the Regal can be treated by those same conditions. Hybrids tend to take on the best qualities of each plant, not just in look but in care. The resilience of the Odora is only emphasised in this variety, which is very forgiving and fairly quick to grow. The Black Velvet helps gives it its satin texture, and vibrant contrasting between the leaves and veins.

A palette of purples, coppers, deep greens and lime, this iridescent Alocasia is one of those plants which look high maintenance, but kindly aren't. Large rippled leaves, with bright veins and stems, the Regal Shields is sure to make an impact in any space. And with its ease of care, it is a very rewarding one to grow.

How to care for Alocasia 'Regal Shields'

  • Lighting: Needs a lot of light, but avoid intense direct. Best in East or West facing windows, or pulled back from a South.
  • Watering: A thirsty plant, but quick to rot if overwatered. Water once the top quarter of soil is dry.
  • Humidity: Can handle average household humidity, but thrives in 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Keep in 18°C or above for consistent growth. May die back in winter if in temperatures of 13°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: Has a lot of moisture retentive properties, with a mix of fine and coarse components. We recommend the Alocasia mix.
  • Good to Know: Alocasias grown from corms (like bulbs), which can be harvested from the soil when young. When you next repot, separate the corms and grow in moss until sprouted. Voila! New Alocasias to grow and share.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
