Calathea Makoyana
Also known as the Peacock plant, the Calathea Makoyana is the queen of all Calatheas, displaying all the key characteristics of the genus. If you are looking to add more colour and pattern into your collection, this is the perfect plant for you. The Makoyana grow striking leaves of bright mint with dark green markings, which look handpainted. If that wasn't enough, they also display a reddish purple underside which is seen when the leaves naturally fold upwards in the evenings.
Originating from the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this is a plant suited to humidity, warm temperatures and a consistent watering schedule. We do not recommend this to a serial underwaterer, but it is perfect for a kitchen or bathroom where the humidity is naturally higher in the home.
Because of its dynamic markings, and deep colour pallette, we think this is an excellent gift for someone who loves colour in their plants.
Calatheas are part of a group of plants nicknamed 'Prayer plants', which is in reference to a funky little feature that these plants share. You may notice at night, these plants turn their leaves up, like they're going to bed, and open them back up in the morning, like they are waking back up! How wonderful!
