Perhaps a nightmare to say or spell, but never a nightmare to look at or touch. This is one of the most glamorous Calatheas out there, with a rich colour palette, striking leaf pattern and the softest, velvety texture. However, all this beauty does come at a cost, and we would not recommend this plant to beginners.

Native to Central America, this Calathea is like any other; it loves humidity, warmth, moisture and dappled light. We find that growing this indoors is trickier than other prayer plants, and we often grow these best in very low light where we never let the air get dry or cold. We highly advise this plant is watered with filtered, rain or dechlorinated water, as the Warscewiczii really struggles to process the chemicals in our tap water, which often leads to leaf burn and crisping.

If you accept the challenge of growing this diva you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful leaves you ever laid your eyes on.

How to care for Calathea Warscewiczii

  • Lighting: Bright, filtered light, to dappled shade. Always avoid direct sun. North facing windowsills are best, or pulled back from an East.
  • Watering: Water once top inch of soil is dry. Do not let the pot dry out completely.
  • Humidity: Benefits from a boost of humidity. Avoid radiators and cold draughts.
  • Temperature: Cannot tolerate temperature and humidity fluctuations. Keep at around 18-27°C for happy growth.
  • Soil Preference: Moisture retention is key. We recommend the Calathea & Maranta mix.
  • Good to Know: Very sensitive to tap water, which can cause crisping on the leaf edges. Rain or filtered water is always preferred.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
