A fabulous and freaky plant which we will forever be in love with. Cleistocactus is a genus of flowering cacti native to the mountainous regions of South America. There are many species which grow upwards, creating fluffy towers which feel somewhat anthropomorphic, and some which crawl along the floor before growing upwards. But the most wonderful of them all (and perhaps the hardest to get a hold of) is the trailing variety - the Monkey Tail Cactus.

The Monkey Tail is endemic to Bolivia, but we sourced ours from just down the road, where they've been grown from seed by the wonderful folks at Southfield Nurseries. There, they are given consistent bright light, lots of warmth and a heavy watering when the soil is completely dry. We recommend, when caring for them in your home, replicate this, but boost the light to give your Cleisto direct sun for at least 3-4 hours a day. Where they grow natively, they are used to a little bit of humidity, but don't worry about sticking this in a drier spot in your home. Feed in the Spring and Summer, and repot roughly every 2 years.

If you love collecting cacti then this is obviously a must have plant. However, this is one of those really special plants that everyone should have a go at growing. If you typically don't love the spiky ones, we dare you to give this a go and not fall in love with it!

How to care for Cleistocactus

  • Lighting: Bright light, with at least a few hours of direct sun.
  • Watering: Only when the soil has completely dried. New growth becoming skinny can be a sign of under-watering.
  • Humidity: Happy growing in 50% or below.
  • Temperature: Best suited to temperatures of around 16°C to 27°C, but prefers cooler temperatures in the winter.
  • Soil Preference: A very loose and well-draining soil. We recommend the Cacti & Succulent mix.
  • Good to Know: To encourage blooming, we recommend giving it cooler temperatures throughout the winter. If temperatures are below 10°C, reduce watering heavily.

Why Cleistocactus is our plant of the month

Soft and spiky, rigid and snakey, straight and curly.. the Cleisto has got it all, and often feels like it's contradicting itself. That's why we love it so much! It demonstrates the complexity and vast variety of plants which blur the lines of how you think certain plants behave.

This is not a cactus which grows in the desert (which might be what you assume when you think of cacti); and it doesn't grow upwards (which is the typical structure of cacti); AND you can stroke it because most of the time the spikes are quite soft (which is definitely not what you think of when you think of cacti). We think a lot of people overlook cacti as a simple plant which you can neglect. Treated more as someone's first plant before they get to the 'more interesting plants', but they are so complex and vast in how and where they grow.

The Monkey Tail Cactus is the perfect example of this. Plus, it is an absolute joy to grow and a pleasure to own. To have a slice of the Bolivian landscape, which was grown from seed in Lincolnshire, in our living room - Yes please!!

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
