The Hoya Callistophylla, popular for its pronounced black venation, is a striking plant for any collection, and a must for those obsessed with Hoyas. Native to Borneo, this is a epiphytic plant which climbs and tendrils other larger plants. It also produces dark pink and white flowers, which smell like citrus and vanilla.

When grown indoors this plant enjoys lots of light, thriving best under grow lights or near a window that sees the sun for most of the day. Hoyas typically have small root systems compared to the size of the plant, and are best grown in chunky soil to suit their epiphytic habits. We recommend watering when the pot feels lighter and the soil is noticeably dry - Hoyas don't like wet feet!

However, they do propagate quickly in water and can root in several places along the main stem. Known to be a steady grower, this is a plant which can be easily cut back and shared with friends.

How to care for Hoya Callistophylla

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light is best, with a couple hours of gentle direct sun. East or West facing windowsills, near South-facing, or under grow lights.
  • Watering: Water once soil has dried.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 50% above, but can tolerate average household humidity.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 18-26°C. Avoid temperatures of 12°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: To suit their epiphytic nature, Hoyas need a loose and chunky mix. We recommend the Anthurium & Orchid mix.
  • Good to Know: Due to their small roots systems, we repot our Hoya every 1-2 years, sizing the pot up gradually to avoid shocking the root system. We favour terracotta pots over plastic to help avoid overwatering.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
