The Nepenthes 'Bloody Mary' is a hybrid of N. Ampullaria and N. Ventricosa. As far as pitcher plants go, this is a fairly easy care variety, perfect for if you're just starting your carnivorous plant collection. Make sure they stay warm, are given ambient humidity, and always watered with rain water.

As it matures, the 'hanging cups' become richer in colour and the ridges on the mouth become more prominent. New leaves emerge a bronze hue which eventually harden off to a citrusy green. Because of the pendulous pitchers, Nepenthes make great hanging plants.

Carnivorous plants originally adapted to the poor soil quality of their natural habitat by forming passive traps for prey to fall into. The lid of the pitchers produces a sweet nectar which lures the prey into the slippery mouth of the Nepenthes. Due to downward pointed hairs and slippery walls, once the prey has fallen into the pitcher, it is almost impossible to get out again. The liquid at the bottom of the 'cups' slowly dissolves the prey and takes their nutrients. Some species have adapted to extract nutrients from bat and bird faeces, as well as leaf matter.

How to care for Nepenthes 'Bloody Mary'

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light, avoid direct sun. North facing windows or near and East or West works well.
  • Watering: Water with rainwater once top soil is starting to feel dry. Avoid water-logging.
  • Humidity: Thrives in humidity of 60% and above.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 16-26°C. Avoid temperatures of 12°C or below.
  • Soil Preference: A loose and airy mix to ensure roots stay moist but not wet. We recommend mixing sphagnum moss and bark into the Base mix.
  • Good to Know: These grow in hot and humid habitats, so when grown indoors it is important to have it growing somewhere warm all year round.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
