Native to the northern regions of South America, hails this small yet striking Peperomia. Known most commonly as the Watermelon Peperomia due to the contrasted green and silver striped detailing on the leaves, this plant is sure to stand out wherever you place it.

Peperomias are petite plants, which grow on the forest floor in dappled light. The Argyreia grown indoors will reach heights of up to 30cm, with the leaves reaching sizes of 12cm. We think this makes the watermelon peperomia a great table top or windowsill plant, as it won't outgrow its spot. Due to where it grows in the wild, it is a plant suited to lower light levels. Anything too dark will cause leaves to drop, so make sure it’s still receiving some bright light, but nothing too harsh as this will scorch the leaves. Peperomias are compact and semi-succulent, meaning they can tolerate a little dry period before watering again, and can rot easily if overwatered. Keep away from draughts and radiators as they like it humid.

If you enjoy growing your Watermelon Peperomia and its getting bushier and bushier, why not propagate it! They are super keen to grow and can be propagated in various substrates from several different parts of the plant. Our favourite way is through leaf cuttings and stem cuttings, which can be placed in both water and soil.

How to care for Peperomia Argyreia

  • Lighting: Bright, filtered light, avoid direct sun. North facing windowsills are best, or pulled back from an East or West.
  • Watering: Water once top inch of soil is dry. Overwatering can quickly cause this plant to rot.
  • Humidity: Benefits from a boost of humidity. Avoid radiators and cold draughts.
  • Temperature: Keep at around 18-24°C for happy growth.
  • Soil Preference: A loose and fine soil mix is best suited to its fine roots and humidity requirements. We recommend the Ficus or Terrarium mix.
  • Good to Know: Can be propagated by splitting the plant, taking stem or leaf cuttings. For leaf cuttings, take a leaf and cut it in half, bury both parts into soil, with the fresh cut facing down into the soil. Keep soil lightly moist and soon enough, a new plant will start growing!

Why Peperomia Argyreia is our plant of the month

Back in 2019, you’d see this plant as a bit of a collectors favourite all over (a far less overwhelming) plant instagram. Since then, the Peperomia Argyreia (aka the Watermelon Peperomia), has taken a bit more of a backseat, with most collectors preferring to show off large-leaved and variegated varieties of Monstera, Alocasia and Philodendron. However, we believe this cute Peperomia still has a lot to offer, so if you haven’t been introduced before, or if it’s been a little while since you’ve last seen this plant, allow us to give you an intro!
Peperomia Argyreia is a wonderfully striking semi-succulent which displays silvery green stripes on its teardrop shaped leaves, which are held up by bright red succulent stems. This colour palette and leaf pattern is what earns the plant its most common nickname, the Watermelon Peperomia. Like most Peperomia, this plant won't get huge, and although the leaf size can increase, the plant itself is more suited for a table top, shelf or windowsill as its max height is around 20-30cm. We think Peperomia is an undercelebrated genus, but the striking leaves, satisfying shape and petite growth habit make it a true charmer.
However, there is another reason we wanted to make this Peperomia our plant of the month... Due to its visual relation to watermelons, we’ve chosen this peperomia as our version of the watermelon symbol, which has been used for many years to show solidarity with the Palestinian people. The watermelon is a frequently used symbol that celebrates Palestinian heritage, shows solidarity with those living in Gaza and the West Bank and raises awareness of the ongoing genocide.
This month we want to celebrate our connection to our planet, and the people and plants that inhabit it. We are one people, with one home, and the war on Palestine is a war on all of us. We will be donating all the profits from purchases of this plant to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). Please follow this link to learn more about the work MAP undertakes.
