Commonly known as the 'Silver Lace Fern' or 'Slender Brake Fern', this Pteris is one of our favourite ferns to grow in the shop. Its feathery fronds display a frosty white variegation on the inner margins, which add a whimsical and elegant touch.

Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa and the Pacific, the 'Evergemiensis' can be found growing under the canopy in humid forests and rock crevices. Direct sun will scorch this plant, so bright, dappled light is best. Provide the root system with consistent moisture, but avoid water-logging the soil. Boost humidity around this plant to ensure the leaf tips do not crisp up. Although they prefer warmth, they can tolerate temperatures as low as 10ºC, as long as it is in short bursts.

A charming addition to any plant collection. We use these ferns a lot in our Kokedama workshops because of their colour palette and sculptural elegance. However, they also look incredible in terrariums and mixed planters.

How to care for Pteris Ensiformis Evergemiensis

  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light is best, avoid direct sun. Near East or West or right next to North facing windows would suit best.
  • Watering: Water once the top couple centimetres of soil is looking dry. This one likes it moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Humidity: Needs 50% and above. The more humidity, the better. Avoid placing near radiators or draughts.
  • Temperature: Resilient to temperature fluctuations, but thrives in 15-25°C. Although it looks frosty, it is not frost hardy.
  • Soil Preference: A moisture-retentive mix that supports fine roots. We recommend the Fern mix.
  • Good to Know: This fern can grow up to 50cm tall indoors. Making it a great tabletop or windowsill plant.

How We Care For Our Plants

Here at The Watered Garden, we treat every plant like it’s part of our own collection at home. While in our care, each plant gets daily spot checks, the right amount of watering, and continuous monitoring for any pests or diseases. We clean leaves, repot when necessary, and make sure they’re in perfect shape before they reach you. It’s our way of ensuring that every plant you bring home is happy, healthy, and will continue to be that way for years to come.
